Studies in texture and form

Valerie Flax holds a BFA from the Mason Gross School of the Arts (Rutgers University), where she developed a multidisciplinary practice spanning drawing, painting, sculpture, and papermaking. Her early career was shaped by the commercial art world, including internships at Christie’s in the Latin American and Post-War & Contemporary Art divisions, followed by a tenure as an auction representative for Artnet.

After a hiatus dedicated to motherhood and work in the health and fitness field, Valerie returned to her studio practice in 2023. Her current work—primarily abstract landscape collages—draws from personal memories, travel, aerial photography books, and satellite imagery to explore the textures, patterns, and forms of both the natural and manmade world. Translating the vastness of the Earth’s surface into intimate, tactile compositions, her work reflects a layered perspective of landscape, memory, and place.
